from the Assistant Director:

Morgan Lucas Schuldt died on January 30, 2012, at the age of 33. I can’t seem to find a way to transform that sentence into something that makes sense or makes good. He was a friend and, honestly, one of the smartest poets I’ve known.

The dying have not stopped dying, they are just separated from their bodies. He said, Pretend to be habited. As the grateful/ take your body, and go.

I have this idea that if I think about someone’s death hard enough, the body will surrender to coming back. If language has the power to cause violence (how one grief calls up so many others), the opposite, therefore, must also be true. As writers, I believe, it is this suturing that we are continually trying to make do.

When people talk about Morgan they often use words like poet warrior, strength, and inspiration. He had cystic fibrosis and what that means is that his body was constantly creating mucus to clog up his lungs. While he and I never talked specifically about etymology, we did talk about our bodies and how they made us friends. Two poets in two bodies trying to use language to become whole. L=u=N=G=U=A=G=E, he said. The brain works with the body, not separate from it. Inspire comes from the Latin, spirare. (He gave us this. And may we give it back.) To breathe into.
